Within the gospel reading for this morning, Luke 1:26-38, there are three little but so significant words said to Mary: “Be not afraid.” In other readings, we hear these words again. In a dream, an angel says them to Joseph and if we read or listen to the Christmas Eve readings, we will likely see or hear the angels say similar words to the shepherds,

“Be not afraid.” Three little words, and so full of meaning. Life can be scary, difficult, and hard to understand. Yet, Mary faced death by stoning; Joseph faced ridicule; and the shepherds probably thought they were about to die. And yet, all were told to not fear.

Perhaps our mantra for the coming year could be these words “Be not afraid” Instead of walking in fear, let us walk in faith.

“Be not afraid.”
