A number of years ago, during a study of spiritual practices, some of our people became very offended at the idea of becoming a slave to Christ. In Philippians 2:6-11, specifically in verses 6-7, we are told that when coming to live on earth, Jesus accepted the status of a slave. Because Jesus did so, the expectation is that we will do the same. Even in the 1st century, a slave was the lowest in the social structure, was owned, and worked for a master. However, in the religious view, rather than something meant as degrading, becoming a slave for Christ is an invitation. This is not meant to be offensive, but rather the possibility for transformation. Accepting this invitation is an act of self-surrender. It is service. It is love.
