Sunday’s gospel reading was Luke 9:11b-17, the story of the loaves and the fish. Imagine you were one of the disciples, surrounded by thousands of hungry people. Even if there were a store close by, you have little money. You wander through the crowd, asking if anyone has any food, and find only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. You look at the other disciples, knowing the only thing to do is send the people home. But wait! Jesus appears perfectly calm, and takes the loaves and the fish, blesses them, and tells you to feed all of those people. You’re probably bewildered! And you are even more amazed at how much is left over after everyone eats! Jesus took what was available, and all were filled.
They say that this story could still be accurate today. There should be enough for everyone even now, and yet there are starving people. Maybe it’s is time to ask Jesus to show us how we are to follow his lead so everyone can be fed.
