The daily readings for today include Sirach 15:15-20, Psalm 119:1-2.4-5.17-18.33-34; 1 Corinthians 2:6-10, and Matthew 5:17-37, in which we learn about wisdom and the law. What God expects and hopes for can be found in the commandments, the words of the psalmists, the prophets, and the words attributed to Jesus. The law is not a secret; we know what is expected. And yet God doesn’t force us to be just, or to love, or to help others, or to follow the many admonitions. It is our choice. If we are wise, we will follow God’s expectations.
