It’s about our response, isn’t it? In Genesis 12:1-4a, we are reminded that God called Abram. Abram left friends, family, the land, his life – and went. He trusted God. The psalmist does as well (Psalm 33:4-5, 18-20, 22), believing in God’s kindness, help, and protection. The writer of Timothy 1:8b-10 points out that God’s call isn’t based on anything we do; it just is. And, in the gospel reading (Matthew 17:1-9), we watch as Peter, James, and John were ‘called’ to be silent witnesses to what must have seemed like a miracle.

Abram went, the psalmist believed, Paul and others accepted, and the three disciples watched. They all responded to their calls and followed. No matter how we are called, and we all are, we, too, are asked to respond to the call.
