The chosen people are …..? While reading the Old Testament, we are often reminded that the Hebrew people are God’s chosen. In today’s world, we may hear from many Christians that, because of Jesus, Christians are God’s chosen ones. But the scripture readings (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7; Psalm 67: 2-3, 5-8; Romans 11:13-15, 29-32; Matthew 15: 21-28) provide a different answer. In these readings we hear of the acceptance of foreigners joining with God, of all nations, of Gentiles, and even (although it takes a while) of a pagan Canaanite woman.
What might this mean? If we want to be chosen, might it not be true that those whom we might not choose are already among God’s chosen, just as we are?
