Jesus answered the question that has been raised for centuries, that of who is and who isn’t a follower of The Way; who is and isn’t a Christian. Even before the ancient followers began their debates and long before we have continued those debates, he tells us. In John 14:23-29, we are told that those who love Jesus will follow his teachings. Simple. And what were Jesus’ main teachings? We are to love God and our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:35-40), and, working together, we show this love by caring for those in need. We provide food and drink. We welcome strangers. We offer clothing to those who need clothing. We visit the sick and those in prison. (Matthew 25:36-36). In other words, a follower of Jesus will show compassion and hospitality to people. If we don’t do these things, we are not Christians. Period.
