Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I was recently asked about the titles Patriarch and Matriarch that +++Herman and +++Meri used in the early days of the Church. As you know, when ++Richard Gundrey succeeded +++Meri as head of the Church in the United States, he chose to retire those titles and instead use the title Presiding Bishop, a practice I have continued.

Although these titles are no longer in use, there has been some interest expressed in reviving the title of Patriarch. After giving this careful consideration, I do not feel it would be appropriate to reintroduce it at this time. To help explain my thinking, I have prepared the attached document, which also reflects on the relationship of the Church in the United States to the other national Churches of Antioch.

I have already shared this document with the clergy here in the United States, and I wanted to make it available to you as well for your awareness. I would very much welcome any thoughts or reflections you may wish to offer.

Additionally, I wanted to note that the Church in the United States has secured a trademark for the Cross of Antioch within the United States. We understand that this allows the US Church to extend permission for its use to other groups or individuals. While we may not all be in formal intercommunion, we nevertheless share in the heritage of Archbishop Spruit’s vision of the Church, even as it is expressed in different ways within our respective national contexts.

In that spirit, permission is gladly extended to the Churches in the United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina, and Mexico, along with their subordinate ministries, to make use of the Cross.

As we enter this holy season, please be assured of my prayers for you and for the communities you serve. May you experience a truly blessed and joyful Easter, filled with the peace and renewing hope of the Risen Christ.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

Recientemente se me preguntó acerca de los títulos Patriarca y Matriarca que +++Herman y +++Meri utilizaron en los primeros años de la Iglesia. Como ustedes saben, cuando ++Richard Gundrey sucedió a +++Meri como obispo primado de la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos, decidió dejar de usar esos títulos y adoptar en su lugar el de Obispo Presidente, práctica que yo he continuado.

 Aunque estos títulos ya no están en uso, se ha manifestado cierto interés en restablecer el título de Patriarca. Después de considerarlo cuidadosamente, no considero que sea apropiado reintroducirlo en este momento. Para explicar mejor mi reflexión, he preparado el documento adjunto, el cual también aborda la relación de la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos con las demás Iglesias nacionales de Antioquía.

 Asimismo, quisiera señalar que la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos ha registrado la marca de la Cruz de Antioquía dentro de los Estados Unidos. Entendemos que esto permite a la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos otorgar autorización para su uso a otros grupos o individuos. Aunque no todos estemos en intercomunión formal, compartimos, sin embargo, la herencia de la visión eclesial del Arzobispo Spruit, aun cuando esta se exprese de distintas maneras en nuestros respectivos contextos nacionales.

 En ese espíritu, se concede con gusto autorización a las Iglesias del Reino Unido, Australia, Argentina y México, así como a sus ministerios dependientes, para hacer uso de la Cruz.

 Al entrar en este tiempo santo, tengan la seguridad de mis oraciones por ustedes y por las comunidades a las que sirven. Que vivan una Pascua verdaderamente bendecida y llena de gozo, colmada de la paz y de la esperanza renovadora de Cristo Resucitado.
